…a little more info on Doggy Dental Care

According to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS), eighty percent of dogs and seventy percent of cats have periodontal disease by the age of three!  Proper dental care could increase the quality of life and lifespan of your pet by two to five years.

Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria and plaque which attack the soft gum tissue of the mouth.  The first stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis.  Over time, bacteria will mix with saliva and form plaque.  These plaques adhere to the tooth enamel, harden and form tartar and calculus.  These tartar deposits irritate the gum tissue and cause inflammation, swelling and infection.  It is at this stage when most gingivitis is most noticeable.

Early signs of gingivitis are sensitive gums and teeth, redness or bleeding gums, trouble eating/chewing and bad breath! The breath can take on a sulfur (rotten eggs) odor from the by-products of the bacteria in the mouth. A yearly exam at the vet will determine when the time is right for a veterinarian administered dental cleaning which will most likely be performed under anesthesia.

Prevention is the best tool with dental care!  Once your pet’s teeth have had a veterinarian administered dental cleaning, the best way to keep them healthy is to brush on a regular basis…either at home, by a groomer or vet. This will prolong the time between vet administered costly cleanings and help keep any potential problems at bay.

While periodontal disease is preventable with proper cleaning and maintenance, please keep in mind that neglect can come at a high price for you and your pet.  Bacteria and infection in the mouth can spread through the bloodstream and cause heart, kidney, or liver disease.  These diseases can cause serious damage to the organs and lead to premature death.

Spa Dog uses Oxyfresh products as part of a healthy dental program for your pet.  Spa Dog is not affiliated or paid to promote Oxyfresh products, I just believe they do a great job.  I use the Oxyfresh pet toothpaste gel as well as the oral solution for an excellent mouth deodorizer.  The oral solution can be sprayed directly into the pet’s mouth for an instant doggy breath freshener, or used daily (one capful in your pet’s water bowl), to maintain better oral health.  Oxyfresh is non-toxic, has no taste, is Earth friendly, and is alcohol and sugar free.
